Classroom Name Picker for Teachers
Cold calling works when it feels even-handed. Hands-up questioning quietly rewards the same handful of pupils, while a visible wheel makes the selection obviously impartial — which lowers the temperature for anxious students and stops confident ones dominating the room. The palette here is deliberately soft: muted slate and warm sand rather than flashing primaries, so an interactive whiteboard stays comfortable to look at for a full lesson.
Type or paste your register once, then reuse it all lesson. Remove each name after they answer and the wheel turns into a fair turn-taking rota that reaches every pupil before anyone repeats. Beyond questioning, it handles the small decisions that eat lesson time: who takes the register to the office, which group presents first, which reward the class earned, who gets the classroom job this week. Sound and confetti can be dialled down or switched off entirely in Customize for quieter classes and pupils who find sudden effects distracting.
How to use it
- Paste your register — one pupil per line.
- Spin to pick who answers next.
- Remove the name so everyone gets a turn before repeats.
- Turn off sound or confetti in Customize for quieter classes.
Good for
- Cold calling without hands up
- Assigning weekly classroom jobs
- Choosing reading order or presentation order
- Picking reward-time activities
- Randomly forming group work teams
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn off the sound effects?
Yes. Open Customize and mute sound, or switch off confetti and the animated reveal entirely.
Will the same pupil get picked twice?
Not if you remove each name after their turn — the wheel then works through the whole class before repeating.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, and your class list never leaves the browser.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your wheels and your student list are stored locally in your own browser and are never uploaded to our servers. The site stays free through third-party ads such as Google AdSense, which may set their own cookies under their own privacy policies — see our Privacy Policy for details.
Is the wheel truly random?
Yes. Every spin uses your browser's built-in cryptographic random generator (crypto.getRandomValues), not the weaker Math.random(). The winner is picked fairly in proportion to each entry's slice size, and each result is independent of previous spins.
